Feeling worried about tax season? There are several free tips to help you get started with filing your taxes and the IRS website is a great place to start at www.irs.gov.

Whether you prefer to receive help by computer, fax or telephone; the IRS provides free assistance for taxpayers to get forms and publications or answer a wide range of specific tax questions. They can even help you to find free tax preparation services for those who qualify!

Free Tax Information

If you choose to access the IRS website through your personal computer you will have access to a wealth of free tax information. The 1040 central is a great resource for you to get help, updates, have their questions answered, access needed forms, and information needed to prepare and file your return.

If you prefer to inquire tax information by telephone the IRS provides this option as well. To order current or prior year forms, instructions and obtain information you can call 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676). You can also ask question by calling the customer service line at 1-800-829-1040. There also another free tax help service offered by the phone call TeleTax. By calling 1-800-829-4477 you can hear various pre-recorded tax topics such as "IRS Assistance" to "who should file" or even check on the status of your refund.

Another type of free tax help provided by the IRS is a walk-in service which is located at many libraries, post offices, and at the IRS offices, where you can pick up tax publications, forms and instructions. Some locations even have electronic kiosks containing commonly used forms.

If you prefer a personal face- to- face source for you free tax help, the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are the place for you. Here you can meet with an IRS representative to resolve complex tax issues such as inquires or adjustments to tax accounts, payment plans, questions about IRS letters and notices, and/or information about levies on wages or bank accounts. Appointments are not necessary but we recommend calling ahead to leave a message with a convenient appointment time to resolve your tax issues. Many communities provide free tax preparation assistance. This is where volunteers will help by preparing basic tax returns for taxpayers with low or limited incomes. To find the nearest tax aide site to you please call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or the AARP at 1-888-227-7669.
